MISSION
To inspire and facilitate the transition of Hawaii's youth into active and productive members of the community. Transition! aims to inspire by exposing students to role models who have succeeded in overcoming life's obstacles, to those who are giving back to the community, and to others who are simply making Hawaii a better place to live; to motivate with reports about their peers who found their future - and introduce practical pathways that may lead to dreams of their own; to facilitate by consolidating the numerous tools available in Hawaii and feature programs that truly work to assist students make the connection between educational and career issues. The magazine will have students actively participate in actual projects. It will introduce non-profit organizations dedicated to guiding students to educational resources, as well as internet tools that are available on school campuses. Finally, Transition! hopes to reach the parents and the community to promote active involvement because we know it makes a difference. With help from the entire community, we hope to achieve substantial and far-reaching results that will transcend the efforts of this magazine or any one group, and benefit the State of Hawaii for years to come.
STYLE
Transition! Magazine is dynamic and colorful. All materials are to be edited for style and specific appeal to a Hawaii-based student readership. Wherever possible, humor, cool content, pictures, and ID8's award-winning design work will keep readers focused.
CONTENT
Much of the content will be patterned along the lines of the Hawaii State Department of Education's Career Pathways Program. One of the pillars of Transition! Magazine will be the profiles featuring people who have discovered - or are in the process of discovering - why their education matters. Our editorial staff will include professional educators using an expository style designed to appeal to a young local audience. The profiles will be followed by informative guides to everything from scholarships to specialized programs relevant to the profiled career path. In short, we provide clear, easy-to-follow lines connecting career goals with the processes that will enable students to reach their destination. Additionally, regular coverage of social events, activities, updated school sports schedules, and other teen interests will be included. We hope to also raise awareness on teen issues, such as drug/alcohol-related problems, reckless driving, dating, etc., and the help that is available for those who are struggling to overcome their challenges. Student-driven stories, interviews, pictures, and art will be encouraged to promote the publication of articles written by students.
For a visitor on Oahu, one of the most economical ways to explore the island and its many offerings is on TheBus. But figuring out which bus to take can be difficult for anyone not familiar with the locations of our attractions, shopping centers and beaches. Not so with the use of TheBus Map & Guide Book. Four-color English and Japanese guides are available in stores now.
The City and County of Honolulu first approached Obun Hawaii Group in 1994 about publishing a Japanese version of a guide book for Japanese visitors who use TheBus. Due to the guide book's popularity, an English version was requested two years later. And the rest is history.
